Baked ziti

1 likes 0 comments Recipe by Sonja Kastner

1 pound pasta (Ziti or Penne noodles)
1 pound or ricotta cheese
½ pound of shredded mozzarella cheese
¼ cup Parmesan cheese
1 pound of browned meat (sausage or ground beef) I personally think sausage is better
2 jars of sauce or 2 cans of crushed tomatoes**
1 beaten egg

** I make sauce out of crushed tomatoes. Sauté some garlic in some olive oil and add crushed tomatoes and basil. Let it simmer for about a half an hour. Or you can use a jar, I am not allowed to in my house though since my husband grew up with an Italian mother.

Cook Time → 40 min

1. Cook pasta in salted water, don’t cook it all the way through because then the pasta will get mushy, drain it when it needs a few more minutes to cook

2. Brown the meat and mix with sauce

3. Mix the pasta, cheese and sauce and put in a 13x9 pan. Then spread the beaten egg over pasta and use a fork and spread it in. The egg helps keep all the ingredients together. Leave a little mozzarella to put on top after you put the egg in. Cover with foil when you bake.

4. If you bake right away it takes about 40 minutes in a 350 oven, if it comes out of the refrigerator bake it for an hour. It will be bubbly.

5. You can make it ahead of time and bake the day you need it. If you freeze it, take it out 2 days and let thaw in refrigerator, you can also prepare 2 days ahead and let it sit in the refrigerator.
